Colombo is a lively city, with sea-swept promenade, hidden boutique hotels and flashy high rises. It really can feel like a chaotic whirlwind when trying to decide where to stay in Colombo for your first few nights. Especially if you’re looking for something affordable that won’t break the bank.

But you can still stay affordably, whether your budget can stretch to luxury accommodation or not.

For any first-time visitor to Sri Lanka, it can feel a little challenging when it comes to choosing the right place to stay. There are too many options to choose from.

We have been visiting Sri Lanka annually for the last 15 years and Colombo is our base. On each of our visits, we have stayed in different styles of accommodation, from Shams family home, mid-range hotels to luxury suites.

And we want to break down the noise, so you can make an informed decision on where is right for you to stay, based on your own circumstances and finances.

Which accommodation option will you book your stay in?

Best places to stay in Colombo

We have broken it down into budget-friendly, mid-range and luxury options, so you have all the information in one place.

Budget-friendly stays in Colombo

These affordable places to stay would be ideal for backpackers, budget travellers, solo travellers and anyone looking to save money on their accommodation:

Moss BNB Colombo

Sri Lanka is a truly wonderful country to travel through. In contrast to most other South Asian countries, mass tourism has not yet completely found ground here.

Chances are high that your adventurous trip will start in the capital of the country Colombo.

Moss BnB Colombo is the perfect base to recover from your long flight.

The 3-star hotel is a calm & beautifully minimalistic hotel located in the heart of Colombo, close to all the shops, restaurants and museums.

It’s an excellent place to stay if you want to be in the middle of it all but enjoy a nice and quiet room!

Moss BnB Colombo has a great vibe, friendly staff, comfortable rooms with stylish decor and artwork. The air-conditioned rooms come with cable TV and complimentary tea/coffee facilities. The Bathrooms come with rain showers and free toiletries.

The common areas feel inviting and they even have a tiny courtyard downstairs. There is a 24-hour front desk at the property. You can arrange an airport shuttle from the hotel, which I highly recommend.

While in Colombo definitely pay a visit to the colorful Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, which is also handily situated close to the train station.

The best way to move around in Sri Lanka is by Tuk Tuk or Pickme – basically an Asian equivalent of Uber.

Mid-range hotels in Colombo

These mid-range hotels in Colombo would be ideal for couples, families looking for a bit of comfort without the splurge.

Marino Beach Hotel

If you’re looking for a bit of a pamper without the hefty price tag, then Marino Beach Hotel hits that perfect balance between comfort, style and affordable value.

It’s one of those places that you think, wait is this really what I get for the price, and not in a bad way.

Located within metres of Colombo’s coastline, offering stunning sea views, spacious modern rooms and extra perks, all in one affordable price.

The rooms are spacious, clean and have plenty of storage. You’ve got a bath and a separate shower, and the little comforts that make a big difference. Like a cup of tea or coffee and a few complimentary treats.

Yes, we are talking about free Sri Lankan biscuits and soft drinks waiting in your room for when you arrive.

But what really sets Marino Beach Hotel apart from the other hotels in Colombo, are the facilities. They go above and beyond to make your experience in Sri Lanka worthwhile.

Let’s start with the rooftop infinity pool, which offer incredible views across the ocean. After a dip in the pool, you can retreat to your cabana on the sundeck to soak up the warm tropical sunshine.

Nearby, you’ll find a couple of jacuzzies facing out to the sea, a lush rooftop garden and even a poolside bar.

Fitness fanatics, don’t worry, a well-equipped gym on site is perfect for a quick workout sesh.

But wait, there’s more…..

We’ve never experienced this with a mid-range hotel before, but Marino Beach also offer access to their private beach, which is a short bus ride away. Giving you the chance to escape the chaotic capital for a hassle free, organised beach excursion.

Another perk that they offer is their free Colombo City Tour, which takes you around the capital’s attractions.

We felt spoilt for choice staying here. From the fantastic facilities to the generous extras, it felt like value for money, that isn’t often found in a mid-range bracket.

And we can’t forget the breakfast. Served as a buffet with a wide spread of western and Sri Lankan classics.

We felt like we were staying in luxury, but at a fraction of the cost and we will be staying here each time we visit Sri Lanka.

This would be ideal for special occasions, luxury travellers, honeymooners, or to just treat yourself.

Cinnamon Lakeside

Colombo is an incredible city, faster developing in the last few years. Because of that, the offer of beautiful accommodation is increasing, with competition getting harder and harder.

However, Cinnamon Lakeside is still one of the prettiest, comfortable and welcoming hotels in Colombo.

We are never tired enough to say how the staff was friendly with us since our arrival. The fine luxury, with a minimal touch, left us astonished.

Cinnamon Lakeside is nearby some of the best attractions in Colombo, in between the District 9 and 11.

Not far away from the hotel, you can discover the Pettah floating Market, the Fort Rail Station of Colombo or just have a stroll on the promenade at Galle Face Beach, suggested especially at sunset.

The hotel is nestled in a cute area by the lake with an interesting viewpoint over the Lotus Tower, the new symbol of Colombo and all Sri Lanka.

One of the must things to do in Colombo, is watch the sunset stroll along Galle Face Green and your just minutes away. In fact, if you wanted to relax beside your pool to watch the sunset, you wouldn’t need to leave the hotel complex.

Let’s step back inside for a moment, as the rooms are beautifully furnished, it offers comfort and calm. The rooms are fitted out to a high standard, with all the essential amenities, which is required after a long flight or busy day sightseeing.

What really shines through is the food and hospitality.

There are several restaurants on-site, each offering a different cuisine and dining experience.

We are a custom to a few afternoon teas; and The Kingsbury offers an excellent High Tea. Let’s face it, we are at home with a country that produces and exports tea across the world. So, there is no better place to get it, than in Sri Lanka.

But there is a slight twist to The Kingsbury High Tea, we are talking about all you can eat buffet afternoon tea.

And you don’t need to be a guest to enjoy their fabulous High Tea experience. Just book a table in advance and enjoy the treats on offer.

Enough about the tea, to unwind further, you can enjoy a spa treatment, or you can simply relax beside the hotel’s pool area and if it gets too hot, why not take a dip.
