I’m Alan 😊 I was born and raised in Derby, which is a city smack bang in the middle of the UK. I still live here now but have lived in New Zealand, Bolivia and Australia in my years – and this list will increase in time! I have visited over 50 countries and more importantly had a whale of a time doing it.

1. Where has been your best travel destination and why?
Costa Rica, because you can see rainforests, beaches, volcanoes, wild monkeys, river rapids, crocodiles and much more in the same day. It is my favourite adventure holiday destination for sure. The Maldives are up there in terms of relaxation and luxury, with Lake Como a close second, and Milford Sound in New Zealand third.
2. What’s your favourite thing about travelling?
Education. Everyone can learn from travelling, and it’s a fun way to learn. You meet new people, experience different cultures, and without realising it you are becoming a citizen of the world.
3. Can you tell us a travel adventure that springs to mind, be that scary, exciting, happy or sad?
Swimming with great white sharks off the coast of New Zealand was pretty hair raising, but I’m very glad I have done it now.
I jumped off a huge building in the middle of La Paz in Bolivia, then when I landed I did my Ice Bucket Challenge!
Probably the happiest year of my life was my travels through Australia without a care in the world at 19 years of age. It’s the best decision I ever made.
I am a little sad when I think of all of my travels, because they are in the past and not the present.
4. If a traveller was to visit your country, what’s the one meal that shouldn’t be missed?
A Bakewell tart, a dessert from Derbyshire.
5. Do you get home sick, and if so how do you overcome this?
Sometimes, a little bit. I tend to use Skype and social media to stay in touch and that helps.
6. What is your travel style?
I like to think it is about finding luxury and adventure in every corner of the globe. Wherever you may be going, there will be ways to get your kicks!
7. Do you have any travel tips?
The best travel tip is “do it”. Going out there and travelling is the first and hardest step for most. It won’t be perfect, so read up what you can and do your best. The old saying goes that the journey is more important than the destination. There are plenty more that can be found on my site!
8. What inspired you to travel?
A desire for knowledge and exploration. I was very lucky growing up to have a family that encouraged travel and we went abroad when we could. I was an actor when I was younger so have been around the world for various filming locations too, all of these experiences culminated in me eternally wanting to see more of the world.
9. What has travel taught you?
Almost everything I know. Travel is the best educator I’ve come across and I firmly believe that more travel would reduce friction between all lifeforms on Earth. There’s nothing that seeing the world can’t teach. Anything from trivialities such as in Scotland they use a word “tartle”, which means to forget someone’s name when greeting them, all the way to more serious things like making people realise that life is worth living.
